Get to Know Karen Hamrick Miller

Karen boasts a distinguished career spanning over 40 years in the legal landscape of West Virginia, focusing on labor consulting for management, employment and labor law, wage and hour issues, litigation, and matters under the National Labor Relations Act. A pioneer in her field, Karen made history in 1985 as the first female attorney in West Virginia to establish her own defense labor and employment law firm. A native of Charleston, she has deep roots in the community.

Karen Hamrick Miller was President of the Kanawha County Bar Association from 1991-1992. She was honored with the Lawyers & Leaders Award in 2018 from the West Virginia University College of Law, which recognizes elite legal professionals that are making a positive impact on the state and the nation. Earlier in her career, in 1992, Karen received the Certificate of Merit from the West Virginia State Bar’s Young Lawyers Section, acknowledging her outstanding contribution and service to the legal community. Throughout her career, Karen’s contributions have been recognized and celebrated. She served on the West Virginia College of Law Campaign Committee from 2013 to 2017, and its Visiting Committee from 2017 to 2021. In 2018, she was conferred the esteemed title of Honorary Member of the Mountain Honorary by West Virginia University.

Furthermore, Karen’s dedication to legal excellence earned her a commendation from the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia for her service on the Supreme Court Pattern Jury Instructions Committee. For several years she has also been selected as a “Super Lawyer,” which is a patented attorney selection process, which is peer influenced and research driven, selecting the top 5% of attorneys to the Super Lawyers list each year. She has taught personnel management for the M.B.A. program at the University of Charleston. She has given lectures & seminars throughout the state and elsewhere. Her commitment to the legal profession and her community continues to inspire and influence those around her.
